Bar

Bar – city and port on Montenegrin seaside. The first time Bar is mentioned was in 9th century. In the middle ages, it was under the rule of Byzantines, and in 1183 it was conquered by Stefan Nemanja. Under the rule of the Nemanjić dynasty, it flourishes. In year 1443 it fell under the rule of Venice, and in 1571 it was conquered by the Turks. In 1878, it was liberated by Montenegrin army.
Port Bar is one of the biggest ports in this part of Europe, and it has enormous economic significance for Montenegro.
Old Bar is located 4 km east from the Bay of Bar, at the foot of the mountain Rumija. Tumultuous history of Bar left behind it a great cultural monuments.
Near Bar, there are the oldest olive trees in Montenegro. Some of them are more than 2000 years old. Ancient olive trees attract a great interest from tourists. Scope of the trunk of an old tree is around 10 meters.
